Global Accessibility Awareness Day 2013 at PayPal

May 27th, 2013

Sorry for posting this post a bit late. BTW, this is my personal blog so views expressed here are of my own and doesn’t represent my employer.

As you all know by now, 9th May, world has celebrated Global Accessibility Awareness Day (External link). All the accessibility (we cutely call it as a11y) enthusiasts did their bit to create awareness about digital accessibility across the world.

It was an energetic day for us at PayPal too. Our GAAD started at Singapore (as they are ahead of everyone with time zone). Employees were gathered in a room over the lunch and our Champion Victor Tsaran interacted with them over video conferencing and with the help of colleagues locally, a few demonstrations of assistive technologies were given!

Then clock turns to our Chennai office where in the morning we have launched Accessibility Open hours to our employees. A lot of employees walked in and had conversation about how they can evaluate products for accessibility, fix them, how assistive technologies work on mobile devices and so on… It was a three hours long interaction with employees over refreshments and some goodies!

Later in the evening, we have hosted a panel discussion at our Chennai office which was open for outsiders too and attended by about 50 to 60 people. Panel discussion was around basics of web and mobile accessibility, engineering best practices and accessibility evaluation. The panel discussion went on for a couple of hours with a lot of interesting conversations like how we could convince designers to implement accessibility and so on… Even after the panel, a lot of discussion around accessibility took place over the refreshments and goodies!

When India turned to night, celebrations were started at San Jose, where we did a soft launch of our Accessibility show case consist of several assistive technologies like Low vision glasses, Braille displays, switches etc., It has been always pleasure to see colleagues experiencing simulations of different disabilities. We guess, that’s probably the best way to educate someone the need for accessibility.
We also congratulate everyone around the world contributed towards creating awareness about accessibility. Let’s take this momentum on and make a milestone by GAAD 2014.

iPhone and iPad applications that I love

March 22nd, 2012

While ago, I wrote about social networks and how they are useful and this time, I thought to share my experience with a few iApplications. Why do I say iApplications? Because, this post will be about a few applications that are used on iDevices and in particular on iPhone.

One of the things I must mention that most of the services are accessible as apps than their web pages. Mostt of them work well with in=built use of access options like Voiceover etc.

Finance: This is one app I use almost on daily basis. This is a pretty neat app gives information on stock value, charts and news about stocks. This gives me information about market gain or loss both as a statistics, as a chart. Since I look for US market (as I only invest in the company where I work for:-)), I look at the app early in the morning, it shows me the maximum and minimum price. It also has a module to read the latest news. Click here to get Yahoo! Finance app for iPhone Works very well with VoiceOver

Twitter: I use native Twitter app that comes with iOS and quite happy with the ease of use and features. This lets me see my timeline, compose tweet, off late, mentions tab also shows me if someone follow my timeline. I particularly like this feature since it would be easy to follow that twittermate instantly, if I feel so! Direct messages are now under “me” – profile tab. Also, there is a discover tab that is again, something useful… it lists down the popular topics, who you may want to follow and so on. In fact, due to this tab, I got to know several things including funny things like “Internatioanl Kisses Day” and so:-) Click following button to follow me on Twitter!

Facebook: Again, I use the native app for Facebook; yet to review for accessibility. But usable enough. Only my major complaint about Facebook apps for iPhone, iPad and mobile version is that there is no mechanism to share what I like. Besides that, we can post status, comment or like what others post or share, view events and birthdays and interact with groups.

LinkedIn: This is again a cool app and thanks to their engineering team, the app is fairly accessible except for a few issues.

Currency Convertor: This is again something I use very regularly. the good part is that you can just key in any amount that you wish to convert and select currency and you are done.
PS: I am just posting this for now, since this is in drafts for quite sometime and more app info will come soon.

How to grab a career opportunity?

July 12th, 2010

This article is generic but also, include tips for people with disabilities.

A few years back, for people with disabilities, it was a big challenge to get an employment in spite having extreme qualifications and that was just due to lack of awareness. Employers were not sure, what kind of jobs they could offer to people with disabilities and not sure, if they had to make any modifications in work place and rules. Also, there were not many people with disabilities of such kind with good education.

But today, thanks to the advancement of technology, the scenario is almost changed and people with disabilities could pursue any education like their other counter-parts. Today, almost there is no limit to achieve, just one should have a dream! There are people with disabilities, who are entrepreneurs, IT professionals, Pilots, Executives, consultants, and that too in any industries including, Banking, Education, Insurance, Telecommunication, Airlines, medical and anything for that matter!

Also, perspective of employers too changed, today, employers are willing to employee anyone with suitable skill set, dedication and commitment. Also, in some industries, although, there are employers willing to hire people with disabilities, unfortunately, some times, there are no candidates who would be suitable for the requirement. Here are a few quick tips that a potential employee should consider:

  • Make a strong decision of the industry you would want to build your career
  • Watch industry for the current trend and market
  • Analyze, if you have all the qualities that an industry would look for
  • If there is lack of any skills, get trained
  • Make a presentable resume
  • Apply for the positions only you would be interested and if you have desired skills
  • Prepare well before going for the interview
  • Make sure, you will carry all the desired documents
  • Make sure, you will do a gain basic information about prospective employer such as their industries, culture, values etc.
  • Be sure to reach interview venue well on time
  • If you would be in need of assistive technology, be open to inform your needs; it’s not necessary that employer would be aware of assistive technologies, but they would surely understand, if you explain

More tips soon. Good luck for better prospects!
