Experience with redBus.in

April 1st, 2013

I have been using redBus.in (external link) for sometime now and never had an opportunity to experience to interact with their customer service before. Recently I had a trip to Hyderabad and tickets were booked through redBus.in. Here is my experience.

I traveled from Chennai to Hyderabad and return. Onward journey was smooth except that the head phones given in the bus did not work well. But that’s OK to compromise. Return trip was not pleasant.

Return trip was booked on SVR Travels (External website). The bus was delayed by about 40 minutes and when we called up the coach attendant, he was rude in answering. Just before the mid-night, it seems driver dashed vehicle with some other vehicle and glass window of one of the windows got damaged. Fault is from our driver himself. And suddenly AC in the bus stopped functioning and when we reported, driver was not willing to looked into and respnded with a rude tone. Whole night, AC did not work in the bus. as soon as it was 6:30 in the morning, I tried reaching out to SVR Travels via the phone numbers on their website’s contact page. None of the numbers wnet through. Tried reaching out redBus.in Customer service and found they operate only between 7:30 am to 11 pm. Called them again at 7:30 am, someone asked me to send in an email to their support email address. Hmm, they cannot create a complaint ticket. When I sent an email, I got an automatic response that I would get a reply within 24 hours. After a few hours, I have received a response stating

We apologize for the inconvenience caused and we will ensure to serve you better next time

as this response appears to me that the reply was sent without any investigation. I called up their customer service and I was told they will escalate the issue and I should get a call within next 24 hours. Same thing happened for next 72 hours. There wasn’t much of the action from redBus.in in spite of me calling them. But thanks to the power of social media, when I pinged @redbus_in on Twitter, I got a very quick response. Initially on twitter too I got the same response that they will make sure to serve better next time but unwilling to talk about what has happn=ened. When I stressed, they worked with the operator and I was initially told that the operator declined to my complaint. I have suggested them to bring up contacts of all the other passengers and do the investigation. Magically after 5 minutes, I got another call stating that operator agreed the fault and was ready to refund the sum of amount INR 300 which I am yet to receive. But when I questioned redBus team for the compansation towards inconvenience caused by their own team with the whole issue, they told me that they will discuss with their management and revert to me at the earliest possible which is not happened yet. It’s almost a week now!

Well, all I want to urge all service providers is either provide professional service or be accountable for the services you offer. Money is hard earned for everyone. Surprisingly during this process I have heard from redBus.in customer service that he is not someone who is working on the case and at the same time, he cannot transfer the call to concerned person. Each time you call them, get a static answer that “we are sorry for the inconvenience caused, we will escalate the issue and you will hear back within next 24 hours”. Dear redBus.in, train up your teams please. As you do not expect any trouble from customers, you guys do not have any right to trouble customers. If you can’t serve in a professional way, may be it’s time to shut down the business.

Am collecting tips through several mailing lists and social networks, will share the responses that are appropriate here. Marriage for a person with low vision – my personal story

December 18th, 2010

If you know me, some of you seen only smile on my face all the time; but might not have seen the tragedy I have gone through. I in fact, would not like to share such an incident on a public platform, but some how, I felt, this story would be handy and helpful to someone in the community.

Again, if you know me, you would perhaps aware that I am a person with low vision and I could see only with my right eye. Most often, community do not notice people with low vision as a person with disability; they can only make out when you have a visible disability like total absence of sight, orthopedic disability, cerebral policy or so. And this is what is the problem. And being a person with low vision person, what I have learnt is we need to be very careful during matrimony process; no matter, if the other party is known to you and your family for a long and if you are relatives. Here is my story took place started in 2007!

While we were in search of my life partner and we came across a girl who happened to be distant relative to us. We went to her place with mediators on a day during May 2007 and we spent at their place from 2:00 PM to 9:00 PM (India Time); which means about 7 hours; during this time, we had a lot of chat among everyone, had snacks, dinner, photography and I was as usual was busy with my hand phone talking to my clients and friends! Isn’t it enough for someone and their family to understand that I am a person with low vision. Also, during our chat, we have (through my uncle), we have clearly mentioned about my low vision to her and her parents among other relatives, who were present. And we have told them do take their own time and revert to us, if they are interested. However, they discussed among themselves and came back within half an hour time that “that’s fine, we are OK to go ahead” and we completed the traditional formalities. So that day was one opportunity for them to discuss in detail about my low vision, if they need any clarification.

Nevertheless, they still had another opportunity that is till the time we got married which was a month long. They were quite and finally, the day has come in June, 2007 where we got married at a devotional place that we all believed in. They were quite alright on the day of wedding and the next day too which we have performed Shri. Sathyanarayana Pooja. And that day evening they said “we did not understand his vision problem, our daughter cannot carry a life with him” and they claimed that I am totally blind and they left our place along with the girl.

Both our relatives and her relatives, teachers have tried their best to convince them and create awareness for a long time but no success. Even I wrote her a letter asking her to visit my place along with anyone who she likes and stay for whatever time she would want; if she finds life comfortable, she can carry on, else, we can think further and I was ready to take care of all expenses. There is no response at all.

After a while, we got a message demanding for a huge money and I declined saying firstly, I did not ask her to leave me nor I took any dowry from them and in fact, I have spent for whole marriage including their travel cost.

Then an advocate ran after me insisting me to give him some documentary proof that I am educated so that he can convince; which I was not interested.

Anyway, finally, we had pay them some money and filed a mutual consent for divorce in a court. All I have to say is that whole this story happened just due to lack of awareness and not ready to listen.

Well, my life won’t stop here. Thanks to Shaadi Centre, who found Hema to lead a smooth life ahead! Watch out for a good news soon.

My advice to people with disabilities is when you are looking out for a life partner, make sure, you spend at least 3 months before the marriage either via phone, email and some personal visits and let her / him completely understand your disability and make a decision. Also, it’s important to create awareness among his / her parents and relatives.

Finally, I thank, everyone, particularly, my colleagues at Net Systems Informatics and BarrierBreak Technologies for all the support and help to overcome this tragedy.

Good luck!

My experience at Puttaparthi

June 21st, 2010

Recently, I have visited Prashanthi Nilayam, Ashram of Sri. Sathya Sai Baba at Puttaparthi, Andhra Pradesh. What a beautiful campus it is. However, I do have a mixed experience but more of the positive side. Let me share what I felt.

Firstly, I thank my sister-in-law Mrs. Subbalakshmi and her daughter Chi. Teju, who had come all the way from Vizag and insisted me to come and see them since I live just about 4 hours away by road.

I have investigated the route and did a good amount of research on their website to learn as much information as possible about the Trust, culture, facilities available, bus route etc. After my work, I boarded a bus and reached Puttaparthi about 9:00 PM (India Time) and approached security personnel to help me find accommodation with the Ashram. This is perhaps only area I would like trust to bring improvement. As per their Accommodation page, devotees who reach the Prashanthi Nilayam after office hours, accommodation will be provided in the documentaries. Extract from the website:

Arrival at non-office hours: For Indian devotees who arrive in Prasanthi Nilayam during non-office hours (between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m.), accommodation will be provided for a day in the dormitories, as allotted by the Sevadal volunteers at the Ashram entrance. These devotees are required to report to the Accommodation Office later during office hours and collect their accommodation receipt in order to extend their stay in the Ashram.

However, when have reached the Prashanthi Nilayam’s security office, I was informed that the content on the website is old and, now they no longer be able to make any arrangements and I need to look for a stay outside the campus. But it would be really helpful, if they continue to offer temporary accommodation for people who reach the Ashrama during non-office hours.

I was lucky enough to find a room for Rs. 250/- day, really a good accommodation and quite close to Ashrama. Later I met my sister-in-law and dear Teju and next problem is to find a hotel for my meal. It’s so happened that none of the hotels are opened except one small hotel who was also supposed to close the day. But he was kind enough to make a fresh rice for me! Here, my observation is that it would be great, if hotels do have some provision to offer some meal to the customers.

Next day morning, my sister-in-law left for Amma Gayathri temple quite early to light the lamps. Around 7 AM, Teju, her friend and myself proceeded towards temple. I must say, whole temple campus so peaceful and I think, I will spend most of my future holidays there. Firstly, we have taken darshan of Ganapathi, then proceeded to have breakfast. One needs to buy a set of coupons from accommodation office and each would cost around Rs. 2/-. Just with 2 such coupons, you will get a tasty and handful of breakfast. Volunteers greet us and talk to us very politely and help in all the ways we need. Very impressive.

Further, we have proceeded to Kulvantha Mandiram, darshan hall of His Holiness, Shri. Sathya Sai Baba, after the security check, since I’m a person with low vision, volunteers helped me to get inside and sit in the first row. There were about a few hundreds or perhaps, a thousand plus devotees, who had come-in yet, darshan hall was simply quite and there was no bit of noise. This is something I liked most and should be implemented in all devotional places.

Once all the devotees came in, vydic chanting was started followed by devotional songs (Bhajan). Sound system was awesome! Sri. Sai Baba came to the darshan hall and interacted with quite a few of us and showed solutions to some of their problems.

The best part I liked is they maintain a strict rule in the campus that no one should make any noise or speak aloud. This doesn’t mean that you should not talk to next person, you may feel free to do so, but your volume of voice should not disturb others.

Further, I have visited their Trust’s central office and interacted with the personnel and they have a variety of programs, colleges and universities and all that observed is they work with whole lot of dedication and offer best services.

I’m planning to have a second round of discussion and to see how some disability related activities can be started under the banner of Sri. Sathya Sai Trust. Watch this space for updates.
